About the instructor

Janice Grant

I am an artist and teacher at heart, with a background in fine art, photography and graphic design. Drawing and painting are my happy place—a space where I can slow down, switch off, and just create. I love pencil and pen, especially a good doodle where I can get lost in detail, but I also enjoy getting messy with oils and experimenting with clay. I’m happiest when I’m exploring and trying new things rather than overthinking them. Teaching feels completely natural to me. I love sharing creativity in a relaxed, fun way where people feel free to try, play, and surprise themselves. While I don’t focus much on showing my own work, I’m passionate about helping others discover their creativity. I’m inspired by nature, tiny details, emotions, and a lifelong love of elephants.

What to bring

  • Sketchbook
  • Basic pencil set (HB–4B is perfect)

What you'll learn

Students will be gently guided through a variety of creative skills in a fun and supportive environment. Over the 6-week programme, they will learn:

How to observe and draw simple shapes and everyday objects

Basic colour mixing and how colours work together

Simple painting techniques using acrylic and watercolour

How to build up artwork using layers and texture

An introduction to composition (how to arrange a picture)

Exploring mixed media by combining drawing and painting

Building confidence in creative expression and abstract art

Encouraging personal creativity and individual style

Most importantly, how to enjoy the creative process without pressure

A relaxed, no-pressure art class where creativity comes first. In this art journey, your teens will explore drawing, painting, and mixed media while building confidence and discovering their unique style. No experience needed—just curiosity and a willingness to create in our peaceful studio in Hout Bay.
